Speaking out on Permanent Modular Buildings
After Ramtech’s successful completion of the new middle school for the Blue Ridge Independent School District in Blue Ridge, Texas the focus has now shifted to the construction that is well underway on the District’s new two-story elementary school. Purchased through the BuyBoard purchasing co-op and constructed using Ramtech’s Accelerated Building System method, both permanent modular buildings are projected to come in on schedule and with all site development activities under budget. To highlight this development, Blue Ridge Superintendent Todd Lintzen graciously went on camera to provide some background and his perspective on what it was like to work with Ramtech.

Modular Buildings on Display at 2011 Texas Charter Schools Conference
As the growth of charter schools continues to explode around the country, a transformation in public education is taking place including right here in our home state of Texas. With 215 open-enrollment charters now available and an unlimited number of campus charters available to universities and independent school districts, Texas has seen the number of charter school campuses grow to 558 while serving over 165,000 students. Many of these students are now studying and learning in traditional modular classrooms provided by Ramtech. The growth of the charter school market will be on full display November 7, 2011 at the upcoming 15th annual Texas Charter School Conference in Galveston, Texas. As a new state law takes effect making it easier for charter schools to develop permanent school projects, education specialists Sabrina Queen and Mike Smith will represent Ramtech by displaying both Ramtech’s traditional and permanent modular buildings in a 20 foot booth located in spaces 611 and 710.
The theme of this year’s conference is “THRIVE: Learn, Perform, Shine.” The TCSA plans to provide a broad spectrum of speakers and breakout sessions that will focus on the challenges and impact from the cuts to state funding over the next two years. In addition to Ramtech, the Texas Association of School Boards BuyBoard program will also be in attendance in the exhibit hall as well as over 100 other exhibitors representing a wide variety of educational products and services.

Ramtech Completes Phase Two Installation at Blue Ridge ISD
Ramtech has now completed the installation of the modular buildings for phase two of its permanent modular construction project for the Blue Ridge Independent School District in Blue Ridge, Texas. A new 27,192 square foot two-story elementary school complete with 17 classrooms, two science labs, administrative office space, and a comprehensive media center will be replacing an aging facility slated to be torn down. In August, Ramtech completed the first building in the project, an 18,088 square foot middle school built adjacent to the school districts high school complex. Both buildings utilized Ramtech’s Accelerated Building System Slab-on-Grade construction method, and were designed to match the other surrounding structures through the use of a full-height masonry exterior of split-faced block. The new elementary school is on schedule for a 2011 Christmas-break completion date, with occupancy to take place in February of 2012.

Getting the Most Out of Permanent Modular Construction
Offsite construction, such as permanent modular construction (PMC), has a number of advantages when compared to onsite construction, including speed, lower cost, and higher quality. There are, however, a number of challenges that come with PMC. One such challenge is the need for every scope of work to be clearly defined prior to the start of work. What work is to be done offsite versus what is completed onsite? Electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and some finishes are typically completed in the factory, with related scopes typically completed onsite by a subcontractor. On account of this, every major subcontractor must provide a design assist role with the A/E of record and the prime contractor. In addition, a very detailed schedule must be part of each subcontractor’s contract. Read more…
